Slaughterford 9 mile
A strong Ciren turnout competed in the Slaughterford 9 mile multi terrain race on a slippery Saturday morning. The Club's Malmesbury and Crudwell contingent were out in strength on this undulating course in the Slaughterford valley. Seventy-five percent off-road it encounters all types of terrain and has a combined nine hundred feet of ascent and descent; definitely not a race for the faint hearted. Nicola Denning ran an excellent race. She finished third in her age group and 5th lady overall and was first home for the Club. Andy Hindson, one of the Club's long distance specialists, was just a couple of minutes behind and the constantly improving Jill Hadland finished in third place for Ciren. Trudy Compton, fourth Club member home, was also third in her age group.

Swindon Parkrun - 5km trails
Fast times up front, a new course record and continuing high turnout underline the growing popularity of running in the area. Isaac McAdam, in 42nd place, led home the Cirencester contingent including two first timers. Gordon Jones has just become a member of Ciren and he was in a battle with race regular Colin Tapley, just beating him to the finish. In a midfield tussle Barb Thomas, in training for the London Marathon, came in ahead of Rachel Jones who is returning to racing after a cycling injury.

Oxford League XC at Middleton
A busy weekend for the Club with the big event being the Oxford League XC at Middleton Cheney. A new course, (it could have been designed by the "Grand old Duke of York"), weaved up and down a series of long hills. Overall it was good underfoot but the steep uphill finish proved a challenge.

Dave Bell finished an excellent second overall for Cirencester behind Paul Fernandez of Abingdon. Dave ran confidently, overtaking two other runners in the last few yards. He was followed home by Mark Fallows (17th), Bill Leggate (20th) and Adrian Williams ( 22nd) who had bunched well and finished strongly. Another strong duo, Matt Shannon (25th) and a returned to form Rob Forbes (27th) were followed home by Paul Barlow (41st).

This seven-man team are in a close second position in the series after Newbury AC widened the gap slightly on the day. Ben Rosedale, Bryan Reid, Joe Barrowclough and Simon Campbell all finished in the top half of field of 298 runners.

Just three ladies made up the Ciren team with Nicola Denning (17th), Jill Hadland 47th and Pam Wheeler 114th bravely battling in an endeavour to keep the ladies in Division 2. The juniors were represented by Ellen Fisher (16th) in the girl's U11 with Simon Crew (20th) and Sam Svensson (27th) in the U11 boys.

Gloucestershire XC Championships
On the previous day Marc Fallows and Paul Barlow were also in action when they were 10th and 17th in the men's 9.5k behind Josh Lilly of Tipton - 75 runners finished. Marc's tenth place could see him picked for the County in the prestigious inter-counties championships.

Young Casey Fallows finished 6th in the U13 boys while Barbara Thomas was 36th in the Ladies 7km.

Walt Disney Half Marathon and Marathon, Florida
An interesting event saw Martin Croucher run a gentle 3.03.23 Half on Saturday and an excellent 3.26.20 Marathon on Sunday, his best in three years and he finished 410th out of 13,500 runners. The races were won by Brazilians Jose de Morais and Fredison Costa.

Swindon Parkrun - 5km trails
Jo Emery of Coventry Godiva, was the overall winner in 18.19. The race saw a PB for Isaac McAdam and Colin Tapley helping daughter Hannah to her PB.

Swindon Park Runs
The two final 5K Parkruns of the year at Lydiard Park saw a growing turnout from Cirencester. On Christmas Eve there was one of the regular battles between Matthew Crew and Isaac McAdam in the JM14 category and another between Barbara Thomas and Hilda-May Latham on New Years Eve as well as Christmas Eve. Cathie Cowell ran the race for the first time and added to CAC's strong turnout during the year putting the Club in third place for attendance. The year saw six wins for Barry Sampson, three for Wendy Nicholls and two for Matt Shannon. Well done to everyone who took part in this excellent event.

Boxing Day Challenge - Cheltenham Racecourse, 4 mile multi-terrain
This popular fundraiser for Winston's Wish also pulls in many top local runners as the winners trophy carries the name of runner Pete Holmes, who sadly died a couple of years ago. The day proved to be particularly poignant for Paul Barlow as he ran his 100th race in memory of Pete, an old friend and running partner. Paul (11th) finished in 23:33 followed by David Wright (24th) in 25.44. Also representing Ciren were Jane Stevens and Tina See, who is just returning from surgery. (Full results are still to be published.)

Chevin Chase, Guiseley, W. Yorks, 7 mile multi-terrain
Ed Morris, one of the Clubs long distance specialists, chose this short but tough challenge to burn off some Christmas calories. He finished 245th out of over eight hundred runners in a time of 56:10. The winner was Johnathon Brownlee of Bingley Harriers in a time of 37:57.

Threshold 10km, Ilmington, Nr Stratford
Keith Firkin, newly returned from two marathons in Japan via a Marathon in Honolulu and still nursing an injury, finished 104th in a time of 1:00:39. The race winner was Phil Guild of Kenilworth AC.
