Four Cirencester AC members made the trip to Shropshire last weekend for the Ellesmere Triathlon. Bob Ferris proved quickest over the swim and bike legs but a broken toe sustained whilst training earlier in the week forced him out of the final 10k run. Bill Leggate recovered from a terrible swim with a solid bike stage, and a 38 minute run split saw him move through the field to finish 209th. Les Davies proved up to the challenge of his first olympic distance triathlon, a particularly fine swim helping him on his way to a 2.38.18 clocking, three minutes ahead of John Evans who performed well over all three disciplines to finish an excellent 8th in his age group.

Cirencester AC welcomed UK national coach John Anderson as it's guest coach last week. Having guided a number of top level athletes to success, including world champion Liz McColgan and world record holder Dave Moorcroft, he was able to put the club's seniors through their paces at Tuesday training before imparting some top tips and amusing anecdotes at a hugely enjoyable Q+A session afterwards. The following day he hosted a fun and rewarding training session for the club's juniors. Just a few members were in competetive action last week, with Adam Harborrow making the top ten at the Lethbridge 10k in a time of 37.10, and Martin Croucher finishing 25th at the Bourton Hilly Half. Geoff Wells recorded a new 5k PB of 22.01 at the Swindon parkrun, whilst Bob Ferris notched up another age group success at the Springfield Triathlon.

Cirencester AC dominated proceedings at the Fairford 10k, although Chris Illman was forced to cede victory to Coventry's Harvey Speed after a hard fought battle. With Adrian Williams in third, and Matt Shannon setting a new personal best in fourth, the club were clear winners of the team prize. Adam Harborow and Barry Sampson also ran strongly to record top ten finishes. Wendy Nicholls was a popular winner of the ladies race, making her return to club colours after a lengthy absence, whilst Kerry Wallis was pleased to set a new PB. The club championship continued apace at the Broad Town 5, with Adrian Williams having another fantastic run to win the race by four seconds from Swindon's Gary O'Brien. Adam Harborow continues to match him at the top of the championship however, courtesy of the bonus points gained by an excellent new PB of 29.28. Martin Croucher also made the top ten whilst Barbara Thomas picked up maximum points and is now a clear leader of the ladies championship. Steve Yates produced an excellent fourth place finish at the South Cerney olympic distance triathlon, whilst Sarah Gunn was the best placed club member at the recent Cotswold ladies only triathlon, finishing 13th.

When Cirencester AC's Rob Forbes takes on a challenge, he doesn't do things by halves. With tickets to England's opening game in the football World Cup, he opted to make the journey under his own steam, cycling the 19,500km to South Africa with the small matter of a swim across the Straits of Gibralter thrown in for good measure. In his own inimitible way he completed his epic "Tri4Africa" by tackling the daunting Comrades Marathon last weekend, covering the tough, undulating, 56 mile course in an impressive 7 hours 48 minutes. (see www.tri4africa.co.uk for more details.) Club members Trudy Compton and Elaine Wilson have also been showing their powers of endurance, taking part in the "Nove Colle," an annual Italian cycle race which follows 131km of a challenging, hilly stage of the Giro d'Italia. Trudy finished impressively just outside 5 hours 30 minutes, whilst Elaine showed good form ahead of her attempt at Ironman Austria to finish less than 50 minutes behind. Closer to home, Scott Richardson recorded an excellent victory at Swindon's "back in a flash" 5k, with Matt Shannon also running well to take 6th. He was back in action a few days later at the Plymouth half marathon, finishing in 1.23.09. Bob Ferris headed the Cirencester challenge at the Westonbirt Sprint triathlon in an excellent 22nd place, whilst Sarah Gunn was also to the fore, finishing an impressive third lady overall.
