Rob Forbe's challenge begins!!
Thinking of travelling to South Africa to support England in the Football World Cup next year? Well for one fan, Cirencester Athletics and Triathlon Club's Rob Forbes, the journey is about to start as he sets off on a 19,000km cycle from Cirencester to South Africa in a bid to raise money for charity! Departing on the 1st of October he plans to cycle down through Europe and West Africa taking in some of the continent’s most inhospitable and remote terrain in the process, including countries such as Nigeria, the Congo and Angola. As if that wasn't a significant enough challenge, in a bid to raise more money for his chosen charity he also plans to complete an epic cross-continent triathlon by swimming 20km across the Strait of Gibraltar - one of the world’s busiest and roughest shipping lanes, and running 89 gruelling km in South Africa’s Comrades Marathon!
Rob is hoping to raise £1 per mile for the charity Re-Cycle (www.re-cycle.org) which carries out fantastic work collecting, renovating and shipping second hand and unwanted bicycles to partner projects in Africa. The bikes are then given to people in need so that children can travel to school, health workers reach remote regions and people gain access to employment and basic food and water supplies. the club has made a generous contribution towards the cause and Rob is looking for recruits from the club to come and take part in the Comrades Ultra Marathon on the 30th May 2010.
