Cirencester to South Africa
At the AGM it was decided to make a donation of £100 towards an epic adventure being undertaken by club member Rob Forbes. With seemingly little notice or original planning, he set off at the beginning of October to cycle, swim and run from Cirencester to South Africa to support England in the football World Cup! He is currently in Morocco, having cycled down through France and Spain before safely and bravely swimming in excess of 20km across the Straits of Gibraltar. He will continue cycling down through Africa before finishing his journey by running the famous Comrades Marathon on 30 May 2010. This is no ordinary marathon, it runs from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on the Indian Ocean coast and is 89km (56 miles) in length. This is the biggest race in South Africa with some 15,000 mad souls (think Rupert Chesmore many, many times!) willing to undertake the journey. Rob will need to have done some run training because, famously, the race ends after 12 hours and anyone finishing after this time, even a few seconds later, will not be recorded in the results or get a medal for their troubles.
To keep in touch with Rob's journey, read his highly entertaining website and blog: www.tri4africa.co.uk where it is also possible to make a personal sponsorship donation.
