22nd December 200

Cirencester AC's annual awards evening and Christmas party held at the Corinium Hotel proved an enjoyable occasion, with new club chairman David Edelsten announcing the club awards and prize winners. Special presentations were made to Bob Ferris and Colin O'Hare in recognition of their many years of service to the club, having stepped down from their roles as club chairman and treasurer respectively. Tributes were paid to ex club members Peter Holmes, Sid Simpson and John Campbell who all had sadly passed away in recent months, whilst the club donated cheques for £100 to two local charities; Hope for Tomorrow and Friends of Sean. David Wright once again won the athlete of the year award after an outstanding 12 months which included a GB vest and 8th place finish in the World Masters' Marathon Championships. Liza Darroch was a popular choice as club member of the year, whilst Ian Pople was named veteran of the year having set a number of impressive times on the roads this year. Triathlete of the year was won by John Evans who recorded a number of age group wins in his debut season, whilst team of the year was given to the men's team who claimed a top 50 finish in the national road relay championships. Adrian Williams and Alice Thomas each claimed a notable "double," having won both the club road and cross country championships for 2009.

At the third round of the Gloucester cross-country league, Jane Wassell led home the ladies team with an excellent 7th place, whilst Jane Thomas continued her consistant form with17th place. Barbara Thomas once again edged ahead of Christina See in the latter stages with the team finishing 11th.

Gloucestershire AAA County Road Race Series 2010

The races for next year's championship have now been decided, although it is possible that there will be changes as the year unfolds. Click here for a list of the races.

The Series is an annual series of road races open to all first and second claim runners who are fully paid up members of a Gloucestershire AAA affiliated club. Currently, the affiliated clubs are Almost Athletes, Angels RC, Bourton Roadrunners, Cheltenham and County Harriers, Cirencester AC, CLC Striders, Dursley & District AC, Forest of Dean AC, Gloucester AC, Running Somewhere Else, Severn AC, Stroud & DAC, Tetbury Royals, Tewkesbury AC.

There will be an Open category and five-year age categories for the older runner. These categories will exist for senior men and senior ladies with the masters age categories starting at V40 for men and V35 for ladies. There is no upper limit to the age categories. Each category represents a separate competition. All runners are eligible for the appropriate Open category with the master runner additionally eligible for their age category.

Yvonne Binks has won the FV60 category for the last two years and it would be good to see other club members attempting to do well. There are real opportunities at all age groups and just competing in enough events, five, gives a real chance of winning a medal. There are also men and women team championships. A lot of the races coincide with Cirencester's own club championship.

More details, including full rules and previous years results can be found on either www.glosaaa.org or the race series site www.runnerduck.co.uk/running

7th December 2009

A heavily depleted Cirencester AC men's team fought bravely around the sodden fields at Culham Park in an effort to remain competetive in the Oxford Mail league. Adrian Williams ran strongly to lead home the team in 10th position, whilst Charles Woodd made a welcome season's debut with an excellent run for 24th. Bill Leggate and Adam Harborrow both ran consistantly for top 50 placings to leave the team's fortunes now dependent on the efforts of those further down the field. Martin Croucher, Neville Prinsloo and Bob Ferris rose to the challenge, all considerably improving on their positions from last month's race at Ascott, ensuring the team remain within striking distance of those above them in Division 1. Jane Thomas continued her fine start to the season with another top 10 finish in the women's race, whilst Nicola Denning impressively moved through the field to place 16th. Barbara Thomas edged her battle with Christina See to close the team scoring in 108th position. The club's juniors were well represented in the younger age groups, with Alex Chantler particularly deserving of mention with 5th place in the under 13 boys race.
