Cirencester A.C. - Newsletter No. 13

All other recent events have been overshadowed with the tragic news of the death of Richard Barry following the London Marathon. Richard, 32, son of fellow member Terry, completed the race and afterwards attended a function put on by CLIC, the children's cancer charity for which he was running. It was there that he collapsed, apparently having had a brain haemorrhage leading to a heart attack. The club's deepest sympathies go out to his wife Lisa and young daughter Faith as well as to Terry and the rest of his family.

Richard's funeral will be held at the Holy Trinity Church , Watermoor on Wednesday 27 April at 2pm (no flowers). The club will, of course, be represented.

Although this newsletter has been published in the usual format, a number of articles have been omitted and others have been truncated out of respect for Richard, his family and the feelings of all club members.

CHEDWORTH ROMAN TRAIL

Once again the club's spring race promotion at Chedworth was a great success. David Edelsten's meticulous preparation, this year with the help of Rupert Chesmore in particular, ensured that the day went off without a hitch. David puts in a massive amount of effort for this race, much of it behind the scenes. For months in advance he scans the fixture list over a wide geographical area and gives up Sunday mornings to deliver race flyers onto car windscreens to spread the word. It clearly works as another large entry ensured that the club's coffers remain buoyant for another year. The club also needs to thank the residents of Chedworth because as well as putting up with hundreds of runners early on a Sunday morning, a large number of them offered their services to help in the organisation of the race despite having no affiliation to the club. It was good also to welcome some familiar faces not seen for a while, particularly Tom & Jane Stevens and Mella McMahon. Full results were posted onto the club's website within 24 hours of the race finishing. Well done to everybody.

RESULTS

02.04.2005 Track 3000m Steeplechase Ithaca , USA : 1 Ellen Leggate 11.06.65.

09.04.2005 Track 3000m Steeplechase Allston , USA : 3 Ellen Leggate 11.09.50.

Taking time out from managing the Oxbridge team touring North America, Ellen Leggate ran her first ever track steeplechase and then ran another a week later.

03.04.2005 Chedworth Roman Trail '10' M/T. In cool & blustery conditions the field quickly broke up along the tarmac road leading away from the start at the Chedworth village hall. Once stepping off road, at the cricket club, underfoot conditions were firm despite some heavy rain during the week. There was plenty of standing water however and the downhill grass stretches were somewhat slippery, making choice of footwear difficult for the runners. The clear leader after only two miles certainly chose some eccentric gear. He wore trackster bottoms and was listening to a personal stereo as he raced along at six minute miling. By the time he reached the drinks station at eight miles, well clear of the opposition, he had shed his singlet to reveal some impressive tattoos on a body more associated with a boxer than a runner. The winning time for the unattached Bristolian, presumably via Italy , was excellent for the very tough course prepared by David Edelsten. Very few club members raced as most formed an impressive team that ensured entries, results, marshalling and teas were efficiently organised. Some of the members who raced arrived very early on the scene to marshall the car parking. Dick Waldron acted as broom wagon for the second year, following the back marker around the course. He even collected the directional arrows as he jogged around. A tough job.

10.04.2005 Paris Marathon: Kim Withycombe ran a chip time of 3.49.15 (3.55.08 from the gun) to finish 12,191 out of 35,000 participants.

10.04.2005 Pewsey Vale Tsunami 10km. Cathy Cook chose some tough competition for her very welcome comeback race after a long absence. She ran strongly to finish third lady. Paul Barlow ran yet another personal best time.
